Dr Kimball Chen

My Background

I'm a Consultant Psychiatrist originally from California. I graduated from medicine with a Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.), followed by further psychiatric training at Loma Linda University Medical Centre, obtaining active certification from The American Board for Psychiatry and Neurology.

Since my move to New Zealand in 2006, I've dedicated 17 years to working within various sectors of the District Health Board as a consultant psychiatrist. Throughout this time, my focus has been on assisting a wide range of patients with complex mental health presentations across all age groups, spanning outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and rural settings.

In addition to my clinical work, I've found fulfilment in training and teaching medical students and interns, as well as engaging with the community through educational talks on mental health conditions.

My approach to patient care is centred around collaboration and a holistic perspective. I prioritise whole-person care, particularly for individuals dealing with neurodivergence, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. Empowering others is a cornerstone of my practice, and I relish the opportunity to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Outside of work, I indulge in my passions for wildlife photography, surfing, and exploring the great outdoors alongside my wife and children. These moments of leisure provide balance and rejuvenation, enriching both my personal and professional life.
